ST PAUL’S CARNIVAL 2021 - PART 3 (FOR THE REGGAE LOVERS)

One of the hardest parts of putting together the ‘Global Carnival’ event for St Paul’s Carnival (which I talk about here and here if you have no idea what I’m on about), was choosing who to represent for the hometown performance.  Although I’m super happy with Da Fuchaman as our choice and his set is soooo good, it of course leaves out a whole bunch of fantastic artists both old and new who I would have loved to have had that slot also.  So I was more than happy to put a playlist together for the Carnival which represents Bristol’s Reggae fraternity to the fullest.  All of these tracks came out in 2020 and 2021 (admittedly a couple ‘from the vaults’ but no less valid!) and it shows that this city still has a huge love affair with the music.  Of course there is way more music than just Reggae at St Paul’s Carnival and some of that will be on the ‘Night’ playlist coming later this week, however Roots Reggae and Dub was the music that fuelled the early days, when the sound systems that ran late night blues parties after the St Paul’s Festival finally spilled out into the streets and stayed there til today, making up the majority of what we now know as Carnival.

Also as I post this, St Paul’s Carnival have just announced that their new Chairman of the Board is Reggae singer turned Reggae Reggae sauce entrepreneur extraordinaire Levi Roots!  I hope this playlist helps to make him feel welcome.

Don’t forget Carnival: A Global Evolution will be shown on Saturday 3rd July at 17:00 BST (12:00 EST). Head to the Facebook page for updates and information.
